BASELOW Jumping

Before you ask, yes I did and more than once but of course it was when I was much younger. I know it’s stupid, juvenile, dangerous, and not an approved use of tech but it is fun.

If you are unfamiliar with BASELOW jumping it is the use of an APTD  or linked APTD’s in jumping off or from:

The basic principle behind BASELOW jumping is similar to BASE jumping but instead of using a parachute to land safely you use an APT to transport back to your start point or to another point. The “fun” is in seeing how close you can get to the terminal point before you transport away safely or as some practitioners of the sport are apt to say “falling with grace and landing with style“.

I guess I should state this here, if you don’t know what you are doing then don’t try this. This is for all you wanna be engineers, just because you can acquire an APT and learned how to operate it does not mean you can BASELOW jump. You need backup and one APT unit is not going to save you if you get a transport phase differential at speed. You have been warned.

When I tried BASELOW jumping twenty years ago it was a lot tamer than what I see guys doing now. We would jump a mountain or bridge and just return to our jump point. Later we tried circular point jumping where we would return to the drop point and see how many time we could fall the same route before you got too dizzy. Mostly we were on auto with the coordinates locked in so there was no possibility of falling outside of the danger zone.

Nowadays I see these guys do things that just borders on crazy. Many of them are on manual jump so they have to activate the APT manually to transport at the very last second so there is no room for errors. They also do multiple point jumps where they will jump several buildings in a row and the only coordinates they program are the drop points and they manually activate the transport points. Real whiz bang stuff.

I saw one guy do a Warp jump from one ship to another without an environment suit and he missed completely. One of his eyes boiled away before his buddies were able to reestablish a link to his APT and transport him back to his ship.

I really miss those days…
