Introduction

My name is Kevin Aaron Aanerson and I am a Starfleet engineer. When you think of Starfleet I’m sure like most people you probably think of all those missions that are so widely publicized about how the captain and command staff of a Starship saves the earth and universe from some great threat or alien plot. You know the stories because we’ve all read about those truly exciting exploits.

Now don’t get me wrong because I have always been thrilled to read those stories and in some instances I’ve actually been involved as a crew member during some of those incidents. Actually it was stories like those that had a lot to do with where I am today. It’s just that there are a lot of other stories that most people never hear about. A Starship cannot operate with just the few people on the bridge. There are a lot more people on a Starship or for that matter on any space ship of size and those people are the heart and soul of a ship. But because we are basically a military operation Starfleet pretty much controls all the press the public actually sees. I thought I would set the record straight and recount some of the tales I’ve heard from the people and the aliens I’ve met during my career. Then there are the all those things I learned about “enhancing” standard Starfleet tech to push it outside of its intended parameters, or as it was originally coined in the twentieth century “Hacking”. Of course this is not something that has ever been approved by Starfleet even thought they know it exists. As the grunts in the belly of a Starship are apt to say “If it aint fixed break it and make it better”.

I’ve had friends and colleagues advise me that I should probably not publish my journal because Starfleet may “disagree” with the contents, but because I’m vested in my position and retirement is not too far off Starfleet can’t really do anything to me. Besides all the stories are true to the best of my knowledge, except of course for some embellishments by some of the story tellers, but that is to be expected from tall space tales. The tech enhancement hacks are of course ones that I’ve either done myself or have seen work but of course the reader is warned that nothing is guaranteed to work and in some instances will quite probably blow up in your face and or destroy your ship.

These stories are a collection of the last forty years of my life as I worked my way through different space ships and eventually to my current position as engineer on a Starship. Some of the tales I’ve recalled from memory and others from first hand accounts of those who were present or participated in the stories. I’ve tried to detail the hacks in a general way so as to not encourage the uninitiated to attempt them without some serious study or guidance from someone who knows first hand how to work them. To make it as plain as I can, if you try the hacks and they kill you it’s your fault not mine.

Well anyway you’ve been warned…
